A lot of what we work on day to day never makes it into a blog post - faster connection times, better video quality under weak networks, small bug fixes that make the platform feel just a little smoother. That work matters, but it's invisible by design.
Today we want to talk about the visible stuff: a look at what we're actively building for the months ahead, and more importantly, why each of these features exists.
Real-time translation: talk to anyone, in any language
Language is one of the biggest walls between you and a genuinely interesting conversation with someone on the other side of the world. Our upcoming translation feature is built to take that wall down - letting you chat naturally with someone in their own language, in real time, without either of you having to slow down or simplify what you're trying to say. Whether you're practicing a language you're learning or just want to connect with someone whose first language isn't yours, this feature exists to make that effortless.
Virtual backgrounds: change your setting, not just your conversation
Your actual background shouldn't limit the mood of your conversation. This feature lets you drop yourself into a different setting entirely - a quiet beach at sunset, a neon-lit city street, wherever fits the vibe you're going for - without needing a green screen or a tidy room. It's a small feature with an outsized effect on how a conversation feels.
Video filters: a little personality goes a long way
Sometimes you want to look polished; sometimes you just want to be silly. Our upcoming filter library spans both ends of that spectrum, from subtle enhancement filters to genuinely ridiculous face effects. It's a simple way to add some personality and humor to a chat, especially in that first icebreaker moment when a little playfulness goes a long way.
Smarter matching: meeting people who actually share your interests
Our current matching system works, but "works" isn't the ceiling we're aiming for. We're building a new matching approach that looks at your interests, hobbies, and the kinds of conversations you tend to enjoy, and uses that to connect you with people who are a genuinely good fit - not just the next available person in line. Whether you're hoping to find a new friend with the same niche hobby or just want conversations that click faster, this is built to get you there more often.
Group chats: bring more than one person into the conversation
One-on-one is great, but it isn't always what you're looking for. Group chats let you connect with several people at once - catch up with a few friends simultaneously, host a casual virtual hangout, or create your own group and invite people in with a simple shareable link or code. It's one-on-one's more social sibling, for when the conversation calls for more than two.
The takeaway
Every feature on this list exists because of a real gap we noticed - a language barrier, a boring background, a matching system that could be smarter, a conversation that wanted more people in it. We're excited to start rolling these out, and we'll keep you posted as each one goes live. Stay tuned.
